Joseph L. Spriggs, 77, of Fredericksburg , Va. , died March 23, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
     Born Jan. 28, 1932, in Burkittsville, he was the son of the late Catherine L. Dorsey, and stepson of the late Roy C. Dorsey. He was predeceased by his wife, Lucy Duvall Spriggs, in 1994.
     He was a graduate of Lincoln High School . After graduation he joined the U.S. Air Force where he served for 23 years. After retirement from the Air Force, he moved to Alaska and worked on the pipeline for several years. He and his wife returned to Washington and he was employed by Children's Hospital as an electrician. Once retired from Children's Hospital, he settled in Fredericksburg , Va.
     He is survived by two devoted sisters, Catherine E. Jackson, Knoxville, and Betty B. Dorsey, Burkittsville; stepdaughter, Cynthia Harding; two step-grandsons, Tyronne and Lavail; three sisters-in-law, Malcinia Diggs and husband, Mary Toombs and husband, and Flora Haynes; two brothers-in-law, William Duvall and Hugh Duvall and wife. He is also survived by a foster sister, Mary E. Brown; special friend, India Harrison; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Alfred; and a sister, Dorothy.
     The family will receive friends prior to the 11 a.m. Saturday, March 28, service at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1100 N. Maple Ave. , Brunswick . Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
