Briefly What Happened Since Leaving School Two weeks after graduation, I began a career in accounting finance with the state of Maryland. In September 1951 married Sam Hughes, Jr. and continued in the finance field working at Fort Detrick in the comptroller's office. After the birth of my first child in 1961, I did not return and became a full time Mom and Housewife. I spent more time at the BES and BHS than I did at home due to P.T.A., room mothering, substitute teaching and not being able to say "No" to any committee that said they needed me. In 1979 I went back to work at Ft Detrick in the field of budgeting, interning and finally becoming the budget officer of the DPW. The girls went to college with mom's help and then Mom and Dad bought themselves a year round home on the outer banks of North Carlina in the little quaint town of Manteo, 5 minutes from the harbor and 10 minutes from the beach. In February 1994 I retired from federal service. Since that time I have traveled to many places, including Australia and New Zealand. We spend weeks at our beach house (bumming around), visiting grandchildren in South Carolina, and traveling as much as possible. Life has been good to me but I really think this is the best time of all. |
